The Underwater Main Character
š„ POV: You install an underwater camera to study coral growth and biodiversity⦠and one fish decides it's his personal reality show. š š¤³

Meet our striped triggerfish, the newest (and most persistent) star of our underwater monitoring project at Feridhoo House Reef. š
Every time we check the footage, there he is. Again. And again. And⦠AGAIN. š
Sir, this is a scientific research project, not your casting call for FishTok! šø
But here's the interesting part: triggerfishes aren't just pretty faces with excellent camera presence. They're known for their strong jaws, powerful teeth, and territorial behaviour. Some species are also famous for fiercely defending their nests. Basically, small fish, BIG personalities. šŖš
And speaking of personalities⦠scientists have been investigating whether fish can recognise themselves in mirrors! Studies on the cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus), for example, have reported behaviour consistent with mirror self-recognition, although what this tells us about self-awareness is still debated.

So, could our triggerfish be checking his reflection in the camera lens? š
Probably not something we can conclude from the footage⦠but we'd like to think he's watching himself back and thinking:
"Excellent. My angles are perfect. Keep filming."Ā š¬š

Meanwhile, we'll keep collecting data on coral growth and reef biodiversity⦠and apparently documenting the rise of an underwater celebrity. š¬š
Science is full of surprises. Some of them have stripes.
